This time, when Mars steps into the Safari Zone, he’s in the company of the Riolu the Raphael Pryde had asked him to look after for his research. The small pokémon stands by his side, watching their surroundings, and unlike how it had been when they first met, it doesn’t seem at all adverse to Mars’ company. It’s still stoic and as uppity as it gets, but that much is to be expected.

Its attitude has kind of grown on Mars, honestly.

”I want you to fight every pokémon in our path. You’ll do as I command.” He looks down at the Riolu to ensure that he understands. The pokémon looks up at him in return, its yellow eyes meeting Mars’ golden, and then, it does no more than nod without even making a sound.

”Good.”
[break][break]
There will be no rushing into battle, and of course, Mars expects to not have to say a single word.

They're here as a test, after all.

Who knows, maybe if this goes well Mars will end up getting a Riolu of his own. A Lucario capable of Mega Evolving would be nice to have.

When the first pokémon crosses their path, the small fighting-type tenses up, even if it’s no more than a Purrloin that clearly cares little about their presence and is much more preoccupied with the tree that stands nearby. Still, the Riolu doesn’t leave his side, its yellow gaze remaining fixed on the cat.

Is it waiting for a command?

Mars clicks his tongue, and the moment he does, the Riolu changes forward, too fast for the cat to avoid. He opts for a physical attack: a FORCE PALM that pushes the wild Purrloin back. It hisses, standing defensively with its hackles raised, but in the end, the battle is a short one.

It’s the cawing of a Murkrow that alerts them to its presence, and Mars watches as the black appendages on the Riolu’s head twitch. He had done some research on the species when agreeing to Pryde’s request, and thanks to that he had learned that it’s thanks to auras that Ajax can probably already sense the bird’s location.

Out of curiosity, he decides to test it out.

One short note is whistled, and there and then, the Riolu gathers energy in its paws before shooting LIGHT OF RUIN straight in the Murkrow’s direction. It cuts right through a tree's branches, causing the bird to fall to the ground.

The Riolu tries to hide the way it winces at the recoil, but Mars notices it all the same, and a piece of a Rage Candy Bar is tossed its way.

He then throws a Safari Ball at the Murkrow.

It’s not a long time until they encounter Ajax’s next opponent: a Fennekin. Unsurprisingly, this one is slightly more challenging for the Riolu to deal with. It’s small and arguably adorable (BARNABY FINCH would think so, at least), but between the fact that Ajax has no good moves to deal with fire types and that the Fennekin definitely knows more than a couple of psychic attacks, it is a bit of a struggle.

PSYSHOCK knocks the Riolu down, but just like a Wobbuffet, he bounces back. What is he, a punching bag? Certainly not. At least not based on the way it deals with the fox. It takes a few punches and the cut of sharp metal claws, but eventually, the Fennekin runs away in defeat.

By nature alone, a ghost is supposed to be a much tricker opponent for something like a Riolu, but Ajax is not like most Riolu, is he?

He charges the moment Mars gives the command, just as the banker had expected, but although METAL CLAWS meet their mark, the Shuppet’s CURSED BODY makes it so he can’t use the move again. It doesn’t matter. Ajax adapts. This time, he does so by striking the ghost with a FRENZY PLANT.

Roots rise to the surface, striking the ghost, and it clearly catches it by surprise.

As aloof as the Riolu may act, it clearly waits for his orders and listens to him, and to his own surprise, Mars finds himself thinking that it’s a bit of a shame. He can picture it: Ajax as a Lucario, a mega stone on his wrist…

He had always known that eventually the Riolu would have to return to Doctor Pryde’s side.

Mars finds himself pondering on all of that as the Emanation Pokémon deals with a Hatenna, making quick work of the little pink witch.

”Ajax.” The Riolu looks up at him, yellow eyes shining. Mars pauses, meeting his gaze for a moment. ”Good work.”

One last pokémon crosses their path just as they’re about to leave the Safari Zone: a Spinarak that hangs from a tree’s branch. They catch it in the act of swinging down to the ground, causing it to pause, and while it seems harmless, Mars’ instructions had been clear enough. ”I want you to fight every pokémon in our path,” he had said, and so, the Riolu looks up at him, expectantly.

Mars doesn’t even take a second to consider the possibility of letting the Spinarak be. He clicks his tongue, and of course, the Riolu responds to the command immediately.

It doesn’t make use of its more powerful attacks, perhaps in part out of exhaustion and in part because its instincts tell it they will do little against this opponent. What it does do is attempt to cut the spider with sharp METAL CLAWS.

Once the Spinarak can no longer fight, Mars throws his last Safari Ball.
[break][break]
”You did well today, Ajax.” Mars means it, and as if to prove that that is the case, a hand reaches down to pet the Riolu’s head for the first time ever. He only realizes what's he's doing when the dog looks at him in what looks to him like mild confusion. Still, Mars doesn't stop, letting it go on for a couple of seconds.
